Before we set out on our 10,000 mile journey, we figured it would be smart to do a mini-mission in our back yard. So, on May 29th, we packed up our belongings, left our pooches with Simo, and headed out to one of our favorite places, eastern Oregon, around the Wallowa Mountains.
Our route took us through Emmett, Idaho, through the Indian Valley, and down to Hell's Canyon. Once in Oregon, we took FR 39 to the Imhana river, where we ended up camping for the night. In the morning, we headed to the town of Imnaha, taking a great dirt road along the river all the way, passing peacocks, cow dogs and old barns. From there, we went up to the Zumwalt road on a tiny dirt route and had a grand view of the Wallowas and of the Seven Devils to the east. We headed north, and made our way around (thanks to the GPS) eventually to Hwy 3 and Enterprise. We were tired by now, but we needed to gas up and make it to Hat Point, where we planned to camp. We did make it, thanks to the knobby tires (we had to pass through a little snow on our way to the top) and my willing myself not to crash. We were rewarded by a stellar view of the Seven Devils and two cold Stellas.
We rode back to Boise the following morning, in the end logging about 500 miles. We are now under the impression that we are prepared, after jotting down a few essential items that we forgot on the Oregon trip. Our favorite things: headphones in our helmets, so we can talk, and new thermarests, so we can sleep comfortably.
